Ford intended its Phase I GTHO to be a runaway victor at Bathurst in 1969, but a batch of untested racing tyres turned certain victory into ignominious defeat. A year later the 'Blue Oval' was back at Mt Panorama with a new car, more power and tyres that would absolutely run the distance. Or else!
Heading the GTHO Phase II challenge at the 1970 Bathurst 500 was Canadian Allan Moffat, backed by Holden defector Bruce McPhee, Fred Gibson, John Goss and half a dozen more. On the track at Bathurst, Fords 5.8 litre '351' V8 with an estimated 330 bhp (245kW) gave Phase IIs a top speed of around 240km/h. The result was a 1-2 finish for the Phase IIs of Moffat and McPhee but the XW-based car would soon be replaced and production ended after 402 crs had been built.
GTHO Falcons were not stripped down racers like some of Holden's later offerings. Equipment included reclining front bucket seats, a fully equipped dash and centre console with clock.
