The XA Falcon GT was a product of rapidly changing times. Designed primarily in Australia and using very few imported components - although some resemblance to Ford's US-made Torino and Mercury Cougar is apparent the XA was larger than any previous Falcon, less powerful than the XY it replaced but with better handling and greater attention to safety issues. With changes to production car racing in Australia, the XA-based GTHO Phase IV never got to deploy its reported 340kW of power on the racetrack. However, a run of RPO83 versions with more power and rear disc brakes on some were built as the basis for Improved Production XAs that were raced after 1972. The standard GT came in a new colour range with a matt-black bonnet but no shaker air-intake. After flirting with five-slot wheels that broke under race-circuit stresses, Ford returned to 12 slots for the XA. Inside was an all-new dash with significantly increased areas of padding, high-backed seats complied with new head restraint rules but compounded the poor rear vision created by the XA's thick rear roof pillars and small windows.
