Shelby GT350 number SFM6S293 was delivered to Broadway Motors in Kansas City, Missouri on November 17, 1965. The white fastback was purchased by the first known owner Shelby racer, James Overlin, who converted the car to "R" Model specs. In the early 1980's, Overlin began racing the car with a considerable degree of success, scoring many class and overall wins in Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA), Sports Vintage Racing Association (SVRA), Historic Sportscar Racing (HRC), and Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing (RMVR) events throughout that decade, and well into the 90's. In the mid 1990's, the race car earned coveted SVRA "Medallion" status, meaning it could be "grandfathered" into all of the organization's races because it possessed a significant racing history.
In 2004, the car was purchased by John Brice and campaigned extensively in HSR and SVRA events across the country. During this period "Number 70" was maintained and managed by Cobra Automotive in Wallingford, Connecticut, one of the country's foremost authorities and preparers of racing Shelby's. Throughout four seasons the car continued its winning ways, notching numerous class and overall victories throughout the vintage sports car racing circuit. Then, in early 2008, the veteran Shelby GT350 went across the auction block at the Russo and Steele Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona where it fetched a very tidy sum.
Racing achievements have placed the car in what is undeniably the Top 5 category of the fastest and winningest Shelbys in the nation. ITs beautiful red, white, and blue paint scheme sets it apart from the rest of the field, making it one of the most recognizable GT350's in America! The car has been featured in several magazine articles, and was the subject of a cover story in the September, 2006 issue of "Classic Motorsports Magazine".
Although this venerable Shelby GT350 is an absolute brute on the track, the machine is surprisingly original, still wearing the front disc/rear drum brake set up as well as original sheet metal and body panels. The interior, while stripped of unnecessary weight, still has the original dash. The present owner, Hal McCarty, believes the car should compete the way Shelbys were meant to compete in the 1960's. Currently, the car is entered in four to five vintage races each year.
It is believed that this important Shelby GT350 race car has participated in more than 50 races during its illustrious career.
